Question:

If a customer needs to cancel an order, can I just select “return” in the status bar and the card/order will be refunded and canceled?

Answer:

You have to open the order in your admin, then you will see under their address and payment method where you can do a full refund or a partial refund.  You also can void an order if you are using a preferred merchant service like Authorize.Net, and the batch has not yet settled.

Once you do that, the order will automatically update to cancelled IF you have it set up that way in your payment module.
